Virginia real estate continuing education requirements
Virginia salespersons complete 16 hours and brokers complete 24 hours of Board-approved CE each two-year license term. These requirements apply to licenses expiring on or after June 30, 2026.

Who needs CE
Continuing education vs. post-license education
Under Section 54.1-2105.03 of the Code of Virginia, brokers and salespersons who have renewed their license at least once must complete Board-approved continuing education to renew or activate a license. Complete all hours before your license expiration date.
New salespersons: 30-hour post-license
Newly licensed salespersons complete 30 hours of Board-approved post-license education within one year of the last day of the month the license was issued. Missing the deadline places the license on inactive status. CE is not required during the first two-year term.
Experienced licensees: CE each term
After the first renewal, salespersons and brokers follow the regular two-year CE requirement below. The same requirement applies to inactive licensees who want to activate.

Licensed in another state?
Out-of-state CE credit
The Real Estate Board accepts up to 5 hours of out-of-state CE in the real estate related subjects (elective) category when you hold a current license in that state and completed the course during your current Virginia license term. Submit:
- A copy of your current out-of-state license showing its expiration date, and
- A copy of each CE course completion certificate.
